The Federal Minister of State for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, has clarified that the recent slowdown in internet speed across Pakistan is primarily due to the widespread use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). During a press conference in Islamabad, she addressed public concerns, stating that the government has not blocked or intentionally reduced internet speeds.
Khawaja explained that the increased use of VPNs—tools that allow users to bypass local internet services—has led to a decrease in overall internet performance. The heavy use of VPNs is also affecting mobile internet speeds. She assured the public that the government is actively working to resolve these issues and improve internet services across the country. Efforts are underway to enhance the quality of connectivity for all users.
Additionally, the Minister announced the establishment of a Digitization Commission, aimed at modernizing Pakistan’s economy through increased digitization. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to promote growth in the information technology sector.
Highlighting the growth of Pakistan’s IT exports, Khawaja credited the Special Investment Facilitation Council for its supportive measures. She firmly denied any rumors that the government is deliberately restricting or slowing down the internet, attributing the slowdown to the increased load on internet traffic from VPN usage. The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring better internet services in the near future.
